The Northern New York Agricultural Development Program – Extension educators initiate and provide valuable support to research, education and outreach projects funded by the NNYADP to specifically benefit farmers in the six northernmost counties of New York state: Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence. The Agricultural Outreach educator acts as a liaison between Cooperative Extension and Jefferson County farm families, presenting information regarding Extension’s educational program offerings, and also assessing the educational programming needs of the agricultural community.

Biosecurity-Implementing a biosecurity program on the farm can prevent a major disease outbreak that could financially destroy a business. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County helped to develop a biosecurity protocol for farm use.
Our Dairy and Livestock program provides education and information through seminars, informal meetings, discussion groups, and individual consultations. Education is also provided through on-farm visits and technical programs.

Farm Business Management provides education and information pertaining to business management skills and analysis techniques. Programs include the Dairy Farm Business Summary, Ag Workforce Training, Farm Tax Management, QuickBooks Training, Estate and Retirement Planning, and Employee Management, to name a few.

Horticulture-Information and education are provided about vegetable gardening; flower, shrub, and tree care and management; weed, insect, and disease identification and control methods; soil pH testing; and fertilizer recommendations.
The Master Gardener program provides training to individuals, who, in turn, use their knowledge to educate others and to help beautify the community’s public areas.
St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario – Weed Management Area
Invasive plants pose a serious ecological and economic threat in the St. Lawrence and Eastern Lake Ontario region. In response, the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Weed Management Area (SLELO WMA) was formed in January 2006. The goal of the SLELO WMA is to create a cooperative and coordinated approach in the prevention and management of invasive plants. Download the new SLELO Brochure.
