Parenting, Life Skills and Family Development

Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Jefferson County strives to meet the educational needs of individuals, families, and communities throughout northern New York. Our Family Development programs.

Cornell Cooperative Extension offers an ongoing series of Parenting Classes for parents with children ranging from birth to adolescence. Parents who participated in these classes learn about child development, nutrition for healthy growth and development, communication techniques and positive discipline strategies among other topics. To better meet the needs of families, Cornell Cooperative Extension also provides parenting education through home visiting and individual sessions.

Parenting Classes

The Magic Years is a 6-week program for parents of children birth – 4 years Parents learn about parenting styles, child development and nuturing skills.

The Middle Years is a 6-week program for parents of children ages 5 – 10 years that encourages positive family interactions and offers discipline techniques that work.

Parenting After Separation and Divorce is a 6-hour program designed to assist parents in helping their children adjust to parental separation or divorce and help relieve some of the stress and anxiety associated with your family’s new situation.

Healthy Start Families is a program providing pregnant and parenting person with parenting skills and child rearing information. It is designed with individual sessions since each parent is unique with special interests, strengths, and questions. We also have supportive group gatherings.

For parenting classes:

Parenting Resource Room – The Maternity and Early Childhood Foundation awarded Cornell Cooperative Extension a grant to develop a Parenting Resource Room at the Extension offices. The resource room is primarily for parents and caregivers with young children seven years and younger. There are parenting books, videos, and interactive play activities for loan as well as a comfortable area for families to enjoy children’s books and other activities together.

Indian River School District Family Liaisons use a variety of methods to support and establish effective home/school partnerships that promote student learning/achievement.

The Community Mental Health Education Program seeks to raise community awareness about mental health issues that military families face. We also want to help make clear the different services available for military mental health issues on Fort Drum and in Jefferson County in order to strengthen the referral process for these families.  Visit our Community Mental Health Education Program website.
